One Second after Death
Those who were alive when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated will probably never forget the events of that day. Many know exactly where they were when they heard the shocking news. They can recall whether they were in the car, watching TV, at work, in a restaurant, or mowing the lawn.
I remember it well. I was in the Army, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. It was nighttime there and the news of his sudden death spread rapidly through our quarters, and soon we were placed on alert. What struck me was the thought that a man, a very powerful and influential man, was alive and healthy one moment and in eternity the next. Little did he or anyone else realize that in a second of time his life would be taken from him and he would be ushered into eternity.
Somehow, we go through life knowing that it will not last forever but believing it will not end for some time. We think we have plenty of time, when in fact we are only one heartbeat away from entering eternity.
Have you ever given thought to where you will go when you die? Have you ever wondered where you will be when others are holding your funeral? Where will you be one second after death? Many people “think” they are going to heaven because they have been religious, but will find out one second after death that they were wrong.
Many others “hope” they are going to heaven, but they too will be sadly disappointed when they die.
Is it possible you have never opened your Bible to find out what God has to say about how you can be sure of where you will go when your life on this earth comes to its certain end?
Why not open it now and see what God has to say before it is too late.
Maybe you do not know where to start. We would suggest you start by reading the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). These books give different accounts of the life and death of Christ. As you read, look for the answers to the following questions. “Why did Christ come into this world?” “How are we saved from our sins?” The following few verses are printed here to get you started. Read them carefully and take time to think about them.
“And he [Jesus] spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully… And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater… And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” Luke 12:16-20.
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” Hebrews 9:27.
“Thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins” Matthew 1:21.
“For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which is lost” Luke 19:10.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” John 5:24.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord” Romans 6:23.
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish; foolishness, but unto us who are saved it is the power of God” 1 Corinthians 1:18.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2:8-9.
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all” 1 Timothy 2:5-6.
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” 1 John 5:13.
