Stop and Think
What will it take to make you STOP and THINK? A momentous event, wracking pain, anxious hours or just time to yourself? What’s next? Am I ready?
An Urgent Need
There is an ancient story about a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Disaster struck. He was assaulted, robbed, and left dying beside the road.
Passers-by crossed to the other side, pretending not to notice him. Would he just die; no help and no hope? Enter a stranger. Driven by compassion, a Samaritan man caringly rescued the poor victim. During his recovery, the wounded traveler had ample time to look and think ahead.
An Urgent Question
The storyteller was Jesus and this story was His response to an all-important question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25). The person asking was a young lawyer, and Jesus countered his question with another significant question. “What does the Bible say?” Without pause the lawyer quoted the law of Moses: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind and thy neighbor as thyself ‘ (Luke 10:27).
The Lord’s response? “Exactly, do this and you will live!” But then the man asked, “Who is my neighbor?”
That is when Jesus responded with the Good Samaritan story. Why? The lawyer needed to STOP and THINK. If such intense love for God and for his neighbor (which is everybody you encounter) was required to be sure of eternal life, and he did not see that, nor practice it, he was truly sinful in God’s eyes.
More than he realized, the lawyer needed to make some obvious connections. He was like the helpless traveler in the Lord’s story. He urgently needed help. The storyteller, the Lord Jesus himself was and is the true Good Samaritan. This lawyer could have obtained eternal life through the Lord Jesus, we hope he did. What about you, today? STOP and THINK.
God sent His own Son to be the Savior. By God’s design, the Lord Jesus became a willing sacrifice.
You can “know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13
His perfect life ended on a cross. By judging His own Son for man’s sin, God offers forgiveness and eternal life. Today, the Bible is clear. you can “know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13 NIV). The promise is yours if, in humble acknowledgment of guilt and repentance for your sin, you put your trust in the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior. Eternal life is God’s gift through the Lord Jesus Christ.
An Urgent Decision
The question “What will it take?” begs an answer. Eternal life or eternal ruin is at stake. Please STOP! Take TIME! Carefully consider the words “God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in His Son” (1 John 5:11). Our lives can change in a moment, be ready.
