We are living in a fast-paced, highly stressful world today– just look at the faces of some people hurrying by on the street– full of anxiety, worry, etc.
Many people’s lives are laden down with sorrow – maybe from the past or maybe from a present crisis or maybe from fear of the future.
If the above describes you today, there is have a comforting message for you from a book which is still the best- selling book in the world – The Holy Bible.
The message comes from the Lord Jesus Christ, and is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, where He says:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)
What lovely, comforting words!
“Weary and heavy-laden” – doesn’t this describe many people in our world today?
If you are among them, Jesus is saying to you firstly:
“Come unto Me.”
Just like He said long ago:
“Suffer little children to come unto Me” (Luke 18:16). You say, “How do I come to Him?”
The answer again comes from the Lord Jesus, who says:
“Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3)
He was referring to the simplicity of just trusting in Him, like a little child would.
Lastly, He says if we come unto Him in simple faith:
“I will give you rest.”
Then He adds, “Ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Do you ever think abut your soul (spirit)?
Nowadays there’s plenty of rest for the body – holidays, gym (saunas/jacuzzis, etc.) – but precious little rest for the soul.
Like Solomon in the Bible, people try all of these things hoping they’ll give them lasting, inner peace – but sadly they fall short of granting that soul-rest which every human craves.
The good news is you can come to the Lord Jesus for that rest. Remember He said, “Come unto Me” – not to a church, creed, religion, man, etc. – but to Christ.
It means you must acknowledge you are a lost sinner (“All have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23) who cannot do anything of yourself to get right with God.
Then, like the “good thief” on the cross, put your full trust in Christ to get you to heaven when you die.
Then, you’ll have rest for your soul; your burden of sin will be removed as Jesus Christ has taken the burden on your behalf.
This is the rest of salvation that is available to every man/woman on the earth.
